Luxury furniture in Mumbai

Most of the luxury furniture sold in this city arrives in a container. Ours is built here — drawn in a studio in Andheri West and made by our own karigars in our own Mumbai workshop, which is the reason we can change the size of a piece to suit your flat and have it with you in about six weeks.

Why that matters in Mumbai specifically

Mumbai is hard on furniture in ways a catalogue never accounts for. Nine months of humidity and three of monsoon; salt in the air if you are anywhere near the sea; apartments where the ceiling height, the lift and the turn on the landing all conspire against anything large.

• Seasoned hardwood, Burma teak where the piece calls for itTeak is used here for an unromantic reason: it holds its shape through the monsoon and does not loosen at the joints the way unseasoned softwood does.
• Sizes set to your room, not to an averageMumbai living rooms are rarely a standard shape. A sofa built at 78 inches instead of 90 because that is what the wall gives you is the difference between a room that works and one that is permanently crowded.
• We measure the route before we buildLift depth, door width, the turn at the top of the stairs. On a made-to-order piece the frame can be built in sections to suit the access. This is the single most common reason a delivery fails elsewhere.
• Fabrics chosen for the climateVelvets and performance weaves hold up far better than loose linen in a humid, dusty city. You can see swatches before you commit, and you can send us your own cloth.

Delivery and installation across Mumbai

We deliver anywhere in the city and the MMR — South Mumbai, Bandra, Khar, Juhu, Andheri, Powai, Worli, Thane, Navi Mumbai. Our own team brings the piece in, places it in the room where it belongs and takes the packaging away with them. Pieces are foam-wrapped, corner-guarded and boxed, and premium items travel crated on a pallet.

Seeing it in person

We do not have a retail showroom open in the city at the moment. What we do have is Peacock Life by the Countryside, about ninety minutes out on the Karjat road, where the collection is laid out across a farmhouse rather than a shop floor — furniture in real rooms, in daylight, which is a considerably better way to judge a sofa than a showroom is.

Does Peacock Life have a showroom in Mumbai?

Not a retail showroom at present. Our studio and workshop are in Andheri West, and our store, Peacock Life by the Countryside, is about ninety minutes from Mumbai near Karjat, where the collection is set out across a farmhouse. We can also send fabric swatches and go through sizes with you remotely.

Where is Peacock Life furniture made?

In our own workshop in Mumbai, by karigars we employ directly. Pieces are drawn in the Andheri West studio, set out at full size, then framed, upholstered and finished in house rather than imported.

Do you deliver across Mumbai?

Yes, across Mumbai and the wider MMR including South Mumbai, Bandra, Juhu, Andheri, Powai, Worli, Thane and Navi Mumbai. Our own team places the piece in the room and removes the packaging.

Which wood is best for furniture in Mumbai’s climate?

Seasoned hardwood, and Burma teak where the budget allows. Mumbai's humidity and monsoon cause unseasoned and engineered materials to swell, warp and loosen at the joints. Teak is dimensionally stable and holds fixings for decades.

How long does made-to-order furniture take in Mumbai?

About six weeks from order confirmation to delivery, because the piece is built after you order it in your chosen size, fabric and finish. Ready-to-ship items are dispatched from the Mumbai workshop within a few days.
